Abba Ho Pater – My Father, My God

July 12, 2026

Service: Sunday Worship

Book: Mark

Scripture: Mark 14: 36

What does it truly mean to call God “Abba, Father”?
As we journey into Jesus’ prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane and discover the deep meaning behind the words “Abba Ho Pater” More than a title, it reveals the intimate relationship Jesus had with the Father—and the same relationship every believer is invited to experience through Christ.( Abba Ho Pater – My Father – My God )

I just wanted to move forward with the word of God that God has given me. Book of Mark, Gospel of Mark chapter 14: 36.
We read, “Aba, Father, he said everything is possible for you. Take this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will. Today I just wanted to talk about above father. The Lord Jesus when he was fallen down, when he was laying down, when he was shedding his blood, that is when he cried out aba father. This is one of a topic that brother Rajev has brought up in our Bible study and since the Holy Spirit has guided me that is why I’m bringing this topic again here. Everybody should come to the Bible study. It is for us Sunday. Sunday message is a blessing for everybody. Sunday we see many people coming in.
There is a music system. We don’t say we don’t give a hardcore message because Sunday we give a message which is for everybody but to but to but to show about discipline disciplehip it it can only happen on Fridays or the Wednesdays when there is Bible study. We can do a Bible study to please everybody. But if we do like that, there will not be any spiritual growth. We only receive spiritual growth when we meditate uh on the word of God. I’m leaving that topic of Bible study there uh saying everybody please come to the Bible study. When God is when Jesus is saying crying out he’s saying Lord take away this cup from me. You can do everything anything. What I think where the from where the Lord Jesus is bringing that reference is from the story of Abraham from the life of Abraham. to sacrifice the Isaac. But at the very moment when God realized that Abraham is going to sacrifice his son, when God realized it, he said, “Stop.” Abraham, stop. You do not need to move forward. When Jesus Christ came forward to sacrifice himself, he came with the full dedication. He was he’s not a God who he’s not the Lord who came forward and moved away the last moment. I am ready. Hallelujah. The Lord Jesus we uh when he cried out we see his dedication when he cried out above father you can do everything. He did not say Lord God as you stopped Abraham please stop this as well. The Lord just Jesus did not say that our prayer are being heard by three people. This prayer that Jesus cried out there is a possibility that three people are hearing it. Peter, James and John. We we know this prayer is prayed when Jesus is at a distant from those uh disciples maybe 15 to 30 m that the Jesus is only 15 to 30 meter apart and we see uh the initial part is being heard by those disciples. And after that they slept. Jesus did pray again and again but none of those heard the prayer of Jesus. Uh every time when Jesus starts his prayer the disciples will hear it. Those three will hear it but then they’ll go to sleep. We cannot complain about that. We might have heard what pastor Satish uh gave his sermon on at the PCA when we start praying to to God and when God will come down with the with the answer to that prayer we’ll be starting to sleep but there’s another thing to notice the Peter who heard this prayer There was another person who heard that prayer. That was Mark. Mark wrote that in his gospel. Before Mark wrote that in his gospel, somebody else heard that. That was Paul. Paul says that twice in his letters.

Understanding the Aramaic and Greek
There is a prayer similar prayer in Matthew and Luke. But Paul says in the chapter Galatians at the three places we see the word aba father. It is written as abah pattern. Aba is an Aramaic word and whole pattern is a Greek word. The we see the Aramic and the Greek are being written together. In the word of God there are many places which is written in Aramicot. It is written in Aramic to show the exact same intention and the decision the of the Jesus Christ. If we see it is also a cry of Jesus the child when the when a child was died Jesus goes to that that child and says it There was a man who was not able to speak. God Jesus went to him and says Ephoda. There’s another place we see it is written raqa that you should not call to your brothers. When there’s when when Mary sees the resurrected Christ, he she says Rabuni everybody was used to say Rabbi Rabbi which means guru means my guru. It is different in every places there is a different translations for it. Greek translation. There is different places which is written in Aramaic and Greek and there the translation is given with it. But this place does not have a translation only written in Aramic word and a Greek word. There is no translation to it. The literal translation the father that the literal meaning means the father the father father.
There is a difference in co Greek and classic Greek translation. There is a literal translation when we translate in classic Greek. But it is not the case in a Greek. The father translator Mr. Rosh in Malayalam to give you an example in Mallayalam let me see if we say Mr. Roshan or Sri Roal that is a formal address. But there is also a direct address where he can say hey Roshian translate for me that that is what the difference is when there when we translate the coin Greek there is a possessiveness is a translator
but Roshian is my translator
there is a difference of my when it comes Dear father, my father when it says whole pattern, it does not means the father but it means my father. This
it is the same way for aba literal translation the father. The literal meaning will the literal translation will be the father. But when they used the abba, it was not a formal way but an intimate way of calling abba. Daddy father that is why some scholars today say that we can also say god as daddy and I heard many people praying it as daddy and there’s no issues. But it does not mean daddy. It means the father when we see in Greek when Jesus is um uh teaching them the prayer it says the our father in heaven and he uses the word pattern but after that he is led Let your will be done. And there was no need to write it that in Aramic. When they say it in Aramic, it is said in a reverence for so that is why the literal translation is my father, my dear father. The father I love I respect it is a new testament conceptament.
1:19:06
Old Testament vs New Testament Concept
There was no such concept in the Old Testament. When we see in John 5 18, we see when they said my father, the people started to throw uh rocks at him, stones at him. They were not seeing him as a father. God is a father of everyone. But they did not have a habit of saying my father. Hebrew in Hebrew.
In Hebrew the the word for the father is abs which gets added to it.
Absalom.
Absalom.
Abnair.
Abner.
Abigail. Abraham. There are many words which starts with the word ab shalom.
Okay. Praise the Lord. Shalom means peace. When we add the the word ab to it, it becomes the father of peace. Abner near means light. But when we add AB, it becomes the father of light. When we add the word app to Gail, it becomes Abigail, it means the the happiness of my father. We have two two people who are named Abigail. And when they were when they were little when their father picked them up and they got happy and they named them Abigail.
Abraham Abraham. Abra.
The word Abraham.
The Abraham was the initial name of Abraham. Exalted. Ram means exalted one. The one the father who is exalted.
Abraham. Abraham. Abraham means the father of many. Even though there are many these many words but they don’t call out as my father there the people might call the humans as the father Abraham they might say as father Abraham. When Elisha was lifted up, Elijah started to say him, “Oh my father, the moment when Elijah was dying, there was a king who started to say, “Father, father.” But in the New Testament, we see God as our father.

The Spirit of Adoption (Romans 8 & Galatians 4)
If we need to call Abaho pattern, we need to have the experience of father, son and the holy spirit. Here we see Paul who is explaining it clearly. I know the concepts are going here and there but be with me. Can we read Romans chapter 8 15? Okay. Uh English Uh more. So we see they cry out aba father. Here’s a question in 8 Romans chapter 8 15. Who is crying out above father? It says we are crying out above father.
Hallelujah. When we read verse 14, we says for those who are led by the spirit of God are crying out. In verse 16, we says the Holy Spirit is testifying that we are God’s children. But who is crying out? It is we who are crying out.
By whom we cry out. Hallelujah. And through him we cry out. There’s a little different verses in Galatians chapter 4 16 I English read in English 46 46 who is crying out above father in this verse. The spirit of his son is calling out aba father. So the question is who is crying out aba father? In holy spirit I am crying out aba father. In Galatians we read through me the holy spirit is crying out aba father for us. It is the Jesus. It is the holy spirit who is intervening for us. But the Holy Spirit is doing another thing that is he’s testifying for us. Hallelujah. The Holy Spirit and my soul we are together crying above father. Sometimes we we think that the father has retired and the son is taking care of everything. Hallelujah. That is not the case. They both are the one. As father honors the son, the son honors the father. The same way as he sent his holy spirit in in to us. And that is way this we have the spirit of his sons. Through holy spirit. Let us all cry out to the father above father. God is not being set aside. It is his spirit that we are crying out to him. We see in Hebrews chapter 5 7 a a loud cry. There’s a word which is used as progay. There’s in Galatians and Romans it is being said as crazo. These both words only say tells about to cry out loudly. To cry out loudly. He’s crying out and calling out the God. He’s praying and calling out the God. As our Lord prayed in, we are also praying out in the same spirit, in the same power. As the father, the spirit of the Lord is in my body, my soul, and my spirit. We are together crying out in the same intensity.

The Parable of the Prodigal Son
There is a moment when there is when nobody can help us. We are crying out in the spirit of sunship and we are uh we when we when we uh when we take a deep dive in the love of our God, we are crying out loudly. Hallelujah. When Lord cried out and prayed, he did not get an answer at the same moment. The Lord did as the as God uh accepted the sacrifice of Abraham, God did not accept the sacrifice of Jesus. The same way even the Lord said take away this cup from me. He did not get the same answer from God. But we see the third day God was being resurrected the third day. Why did not God hear Jesus’s pray the same day? when and the God is is sitting there to hear to our prayers.
Praise the Lord. Hallelujah. It was for us that God gave his only son. That was that is a concept of the New Testament. We all know the story this par parable of the prodigal son coming back to see his father. We read it in Luke chapter 15. In verse 15, chapter 15 18, the son goes to his father and says, “I have sinned against the heaven and against you. It it says father I it was the same way when he when he came to meet his father. Father ran towards him and son said father I he did not he did think about saying to consider me as one of your servant but the father did not allow him to say that in verse 24 the father says like this son of mine He was not a servant of mine. If if he was the servant, he might have to uh get back everything that was lost. If it was the servant who did the same way, it could be his worst life. Now, Since he was the father, he forgave his son.
It says my son. There’s another another part where elder brother comes in to fight against in verse 31 it says goes out towards his son and says my son. They were saying overflowing love of the father. When prodical son initially went to ask for his property to the father, he also says my father. When initially when he was going to ask for properties and when he said the pettor the father he was not that happy or not was not having a great feeling about it.
Hey father give me whatever I deserve. That is how he went. When he called out of my father the second time when he came back it was filled with love and in humbleness but there was no distinction from the father’s side. Father only had the love even though he destroyed everything. Even though he will destroy everything knowing that the father gave it to his son. He knew when his son went away he will destroy everything. But when he came back he calls him as my son. Can we all praise the father?
Praise the lord. There is no change in the mindset of our father.

Personal Stories and Final Thoughts
Aba father Abah back in Kerala there was a Catholic priest who was counseling me it was when I was studying for for counseling a class and he there was a Catholic priest who was teaching us When he was teaching, he shared his testimony saying his father was a very bad man. He would abuse his wife and his son. And that is how the priest uh he came to decide that he will be a priest. And when he started to pray and to read the scriptures, he saw everywhere it is written, “My father, my father.” When he reads about father, the word father, he thinks about his father. And he did not like to pray saying father. So his mentor told him instead of father start praying oh mother. There are some things that happens like this. But let me tell you another example.
My one of my supervisor. When he was uh when he was born his parents were not married. He did not see his father. He saw his mother a couple of times. He the his mother’s grandmother
mother and great grand
the mother and great grandmother looked after him great grandmother. The mothers thought that he is going to be like his father. Let the name of his father be put to him as well. Even though he did not see or respect his Even though he did not see his father but the name of his father was given to him when he was when he bec at the age of 70 he went to the government office and asked let his name be removed.
He requested the his the name of his father to be removed because he did not see or hear about his father. a few months uh before the Holy Spirit spoke to him. He he is a he’s from a Pentecostal background and he he does speak to Holy Spirit and Holy Spirit speaks to him. Holy Spirit speaks to him that son everybody considers me as father. But there is something that many people forget. It is like I am your father. I am your father. Now he is at the age of 70 and whoever he sees he tells about this uh message.
Your your god is your father. So cry out to the God saying our father when Jesus Christ is coming out of his resurrection the when all the ladies are when all the women are coming towards him. There’s a a talk that Jesus is saying you go and tell my brothers Lord did not say as my disciples. He said go and tell my brothers. I am going to my father and your father. My God and your God. It is not a sentence which is grammatically correct. If I write it, it will be this way. Go and tell those brothers that I am going to my father and their father. my God and their their God. And how is the Holy Spirit talking to you? Go and tell my brothers. That means my brothers are also the sons of my God. My father and your father, the brothers of your father. Hallelujah. The resurrected Jesus who got the answer from his father. He says, “My father, your father, my God is your God.”
Let me conclude to my my words. There is a moment when nobody can help in nobody can help uh when you cry out. There is a time when Jesus cries out above father.
What is the last word that Jesus said? What did he cry out on the cross? God, I am giving my life unto your hand. Hallelujah. He says my father in my childhood I have seen many people in my relations uh die. When I was in a school there was an incident when I remember that when I was in school my one of my uh grandfather was died. Not my not my grandfather, one of the older older person. When people gathered at his house, they were uh saying about Joseph, Mary, let let you be with him. And the person and that person the people are also trying him uh letting trying him to say Joseph and Mary be with me. There was another incident where one of my aunties was one of my auntie was dying. When she was uh breathing hard she was crying out my my mother my mother When people besides her heard it, they said to her, “Do not call mother mother, but say my father, my god.” I’m not telling you to make you upset, but it is a blessing when you cry out, “My father, my god. Hallelujah. Let us live in a relationship where we cry out aba father. Let us die out in a relation where we cry out aba father. These words let it be a blessing for each one of us.
